Description:
The explosion of interest in and use of the World Wide Web has created
a
great demand for Web page designers. Recent advances in script languages
such
as
JavaScript, and software packages such as Microsoft FrontPage have given
Webmaster’s powerful
tools to create professional Web pages. The student will learn the techniques
of
Web
page design using HTML, and Microsoft FrontPage.
Course
Objectives:
- Become familiar with the HTML language and understand the differences
that exist between the different versions being used in the industry
today.
- Become familiar with the various web-authoring tools available,
including editors, converters, and integrated packages like Microsoft’s
FrontPage.
- Learn how web browser software is used. Discuss some of the issues
that are presented to the designer given the various different technologies
and platforms that use these browsers.
- Understand the different visual files that can be used on the Internet.
- Learn to publish a web site to the WWW. We will look at the tools
provided in Microsoft’s package and other software packages
that enable you to download and upload your web site to your Web Presence
Provider.
- Learn how to publicize a web site using the various search engine
services.
Preparation: It is expected that the student
will spend at least two hours of study outside of class
for each in-class hour (50 minute session). This will involve reading
assignments in the course text
and laboratory exercises.
Required Text and Supplies:
Creating Web Pages with HTML, Carey
Microsoft FrontPage 98, Hayen
Outline of Topics:
Please refer to each textbook’s table of contents. We will cover
Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 in the “Creating Web Pages with HTML”
book. All of the Microsoft FrontPage 98 books will be covered as well.
Evaluation Method: The course grade will be determined
by 1) attendance; 2) projects and practical exams; and 3) lab exercises/homework
assignments 4) Instructors overall evaluation of the student’s performance
and attitude (Ultimately left up to the instructors discretion. Failure
to hand in a final or midterm will result in an automatic zero for the
evaluation). The final grade will be computed as follows:
Lab exercises/Homework 30%
Projects and Exams 50%
Instructors Evaluation 10%
Attendance 10%
A = 90 - 100 percentage of total points
B = 80 - 89.9
C = 70 - 79.9
D = 60 - 69.9
F = 0 - 59.9
Attendance Policy: Attendance counts for 10% of your
grade, which is equivalent to one letter grade. Your attendance grade
is calculated as follows for each class: 100 points for attendance, 0
point for late attendance, 0 points for not attending class.
Late attendance is defined as arriving to the classroom after the start
of class. No one is to leave the classroom during scheduled classes unless
given permission by the instructor. If you leave class early you will
be graded the same as for late attendance.
The instructor may dismiss from her/his class with the grade of “W”
any student who has missed the equivalent of two weeks of class.
Information Literacy Assignments: The computer field
changes rapidly. The only way to keep up with the field is to read technical
literature as well as popular newspapers and magazines. You will be given
assignments during the semester related to our need to keep pace with
the field.
Tutoring Services: Please be aware that Sullivan County
Community College provides tutoring for all students free of charge. It
is expected that many of the students in this course will use the tutoring
services. You may make appointments at the Center for Learning Assistance
near the Library.
Special Note: No late homework assignments will be accepted.
If you miss a class, you may contact me at rmcelrath@sullivan.suny.edu
